Why Does My Pour-Over Keeps Clogging?

  • Dense, high-grown light roasts. Barista Hustle’s grind research found high-grown Ethiopian and washed African coffees to be more brittle than darker or lower-grown beans. They shatter into extra fines that often stall the final third of a brew, and natural-process sugars can make those fines stick.
  • Wrong paper or a bad fit. Thick unbleached brown papers drain slowly, while fast-flow papers are woven to resist blinding. A poor fit can pin a fold across a wall and choke part of the exit.
  • Deep beds, narrow exits, and trapped air. A big dose piles a deep bed that drains slowly, and cone shapes stack much of that depth over a small stretch of filter wall.
